Best Solar Well Pumps (2026 Buyer's Guide)

A solar well pump pulls water from your well using power from solar panels, with no grid connection and no fuel. For an off-grid home, a remote cabin, a ranch, or a property where running a power line to the wellhead would cost a fortune, it is the difference between hauling water and turning on a tap. This guide covers how solar well pumps work, how to pick the right one, and the Grundfos pumps we carry at Krato Power for wells from shallow to 820 feet deep.

How a solar well pump works

A submersible solar well pump sits down inside the well casing, below the water line, and pushes water up to the surface. Panels at the surface feed the pump through a controller. Most off-grid setups run the pump directly from the sun during the day and store water in a tank or cistern, so you draw from the tank at night instead of storing energy in batteries. That "water tank instead of a battery bank" approach is what keeps a good solar well pump simple and affordable.

Two things decide which pump you need: how deep the water sits in your well, and how much water you use per day. Everything else follows from those two numbers.

Two Grundfos families: SQFlex and SQ Series

We carry Grundfos because it is the pump the serious off-grid water installers trust, and because the line splits cleanly into two families that cover two different buyers.

The SQFlex line is the true off-grid, solar-direct pump. A single SQFlex pump accepts a wide range of power, so it can run straight off solar panels, and it can also take wind, a battery bank, or a generator as a backup source. If you want water with no grid at all, this is the family built for it.

The SQ Series is a high-efficiency submersible pump that runs on standard 120V or 240V power. It is the right pick when you have a solar system with an inverter already, or a grid connection you want to pair with solar, and you want Grundfos reliability at a lower price than SQFlex.

How to choose: match the pump to your well

Start with well depth, specifically how far down the water sits (not the total drilled depth), then your daily gallons.

For a shallow to moderate well, roughly up to 160 to 250 feet, an SQ Series pump is the efficient, affordable choice. For a deep or very deep well, or for a true off-grid build with no inverter, step up to SQFlex, which reaches 395 feet on the 11 SQF-2 and up to 820 feet on the 6 SQF-3.

Then match flow to use. A single home runs comfortably on 5 to 10 GPM. A property watering livestock or irrigating needs more, which is where the 15 and 22 GPM pumps earn their place.

The Grundfos solar well pumps we carry

Prices below are current at Krato Power. Browse them all in the Solar Well Pumps collection.

For off-grid, solar-direct wells: Grundfos SQFlex

The Grundfos 11 SQF-2 SQFlex delivers up to 13 GPM and lifts from as deep as 395 feet, at $3,099.97. It is the workhorse SQFlex for homes and farms that want higher flow on solar.

The Grundfos 6 SQF-3 SQFlex is the deep-well specialist: 6 GPM but lift from as far down as 820 feet, at $3,398.97. If your water sits several hundred feet down, this is the pump that reaches it on solar power alone.

Both SQFlex pumps run on solar, wind, battery, or generator, so you are never stranded on a long cloudy stretch.

For solar-powered systems with an inverter: Grundfos SQ Series

The Grundfos 10 SQ05-160 is the entry point: 10 GPM, 1/2 HP, 160 ft, 120V, at $998.97, a strong fit for a shallower home well.

Stepping deeper, the Grundfos 10 SQ07-200 (10 GPM, 3/4 HP, 200 ft, $1,154.88) and the Grundfos 10 SQ07-240 (10 GPM, 3/4 HP, 240 ft, $1,221.17) cover standard home wells.

For higher flow, the Grundfos 15 SQ10-250 gives 15 GPM, 1 HP, to 250 ft at $1,292.04, and the Grundfos 22 SQ15-220 pushes 22 GPM, 1.5 HP, to 220 ft at $1,699.97, enough for irrigation or a property with heavy demand.

Frequently asked questions

How deep can a solar well pump go?

It depends on the pump. Our Grundfos SQ Series reaches 160 to 250 feet, the SQFlex 11 SQF-2 reaches 395 feet, and the SQFlex 6 SQF-3 reaches up to 820 feet. Match the pump's rated lift to how far down your water actually sits.

Do I need batteries for a solar well pump?

Usually no. Most off-grid setups pump water into a storage tank during daylight and draw from the tank at night, which is simpler and cheaper than a battery bank. Grundfos SQFlex pumps can also take a battery or generator as backup if you want water on demand regardless of sun.

Will a solar well pump run my whole house?

A solar well pump supplies water, not household electricity. For a home, size the pump to your daily water use and well depth. A 10 GPM SQ Series or an SQFlex pump covers a typical household; heavy irrigation or livestock needs the 15 or 22 GPM models.

SQFlex or SQ Series: which should I buy?

Choose SQFlex if you are fully off-grid and want the pump to run straight from solar (and optionally wind, battery, or generator). Choose the SQ Series if you already have an inverter-based solar system or a grid connection to pair with solar, and you want Grundfos quality at a lower price.

Get the right pump the first time

The wrong-sized pump is the most expensive mistake in a solar water project. Tell the Krato Power team your well's water depth and your daily water use, and we will match you to the right Grundfos pump before you buy. Browse the full range in the Solar Well Pumps collection.
