Nashville's RV parks follow the music and the water. The first cluster sits in Music Valley, on a bend of the Cumberland River near the Grand Ole Opry, Opry Mills and the Gaylord Opryland complex, about 15 minutes from the honky-tonks of Lower Broadway. The second rings J. Percy Priest Lake, a 14,000-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir on the east and southeast side of the county, where lakefront parks come with marinas and boat rentals. A third group lies north along I-65 in Goodlettsville, near Old Hickory Lake. Hot, humid summers and mild winters make for a long camping season, with spring and fall the busiest stretches, though some lake parks shut down for the winter.

Out on the lake when a storm rolls in?
Middle Tennessee gets strong spring thunderstorms, and one downed line can leave a lakeside park dark for hours. A portable power station keeps the fridge, fans and phones going until the power comes back, and on good days it rides along on the pontoon or out to a tailgate before a Titans game. Add a solar panel and it can top itself up at the site.
