Savannah was laid out in 1733 by James Oglethorpe, making it Georgia's oldest city, and its grid of squares under live oaks and Spanish moss is the reason most RVers stop. River Street along the Savannah River and the beach at Tybee Island, about 15 miles east of downtown, fill out the itinerary. Winters are gentle enough to pull in snowbirds and I-95 travelers, though summers are sticky and storm season stretches from June into November. Campgrounds spread around the city instead of gathering downtown: on Tybee, southwest near I-95 and Fort Argyle Road, on Skidaway Island to the southeast, and down along the Ogeechee River in Richmond Hill.

Heading out to the marsh or the beach?
Savannah days often end far from the hookup: a trail through the salt marsh at Skidaway, a fishing dock on Redbird Creek, a long afternoon on Tybee. A portable power station keeps phones, lights and a small fridge going wherever the day goes, and it makes a quiet backup if a summer thunderstorm takes out the campground's power for a while.
