Home Battery Backup: Batteries for Outages, Solar, and Off-Grid Homes

A home battery backup stores electricity so your fridge, lights, internet, furnace blower, and well pump keep running when the grid goes down.   • Wall mount batteries: the 16 kWh EG4 Indoor and All Weather WallMount (48V, 314Ah) and the 10 kWh SunGoldPower Powerwall X mount on the wall beside your inverter.

How much battery do you need?

Size the battery to the loads you want to cover and how many hours you need them, not to the size of your house. As a starting point:

  • Essentials (fridge, lights, internet, phones): about 5 to 10 kWh for a day and a night.
  • Essentials plus comfort (add a well pump, some heating or cooling, more outlets): about 10 to 15 kWh.
  • Whole home (most circuits and heavy appliances): 20 kWh and up, with an inverter sized for motor surges like central air.

What else you need

A battery stores the power, but an inverter turns it into household AC. Pair your battery with a compatible hybrid inverter, and check that the battery is on the inverter's approved list if you want closed-loop communication. To power hard-wired circuits, use a transfer switch or a backup loads panel installed by a licensed electrician. Add solar panels or a generator to recharge during long outages, or charge from the grid if you do not have solar.

How long will a home battery backup last?

Runtime is capacity divided by load. A 10 kWh battery runs about 500 watts of essentials for roughly 16 to 20 hours, and far less once heavy loads like HVAC kick in.

Do I need solar for a home battery?

No. A battery can charge from the grid and hold that power for outages. Solar adds the ability to recharge during a long outage and lower your daily bill. See whole-home battery backup without solar.

Is LiFePO4 better than lead acid?

For most homes, yes. LiFePO4 lasts thousands of cycles, needs no maintenance, and can use most of its rated capacity. Lead acid costs less up front but is heavier, needs more care, and should not be drained as deeply.
