St. George sits in Utah's far southwest corner on I-15, about 90 minutes north of Las Vegas, and its low-desert winters are mild enough to pull in snowbirds. Summers are very hot, so the busy stretch runs from fall through spring, and many parks publish monthly winter rates. Most visitors use the city as a base for red rock: Zion National Park is roughly 45 to 50 minutes east, Sand Hollow State Park about 15 minutes southeast and Snow Canyon State Park 15 to 20 minutes northwest. Parks group in three areas: central St. George near Main Street and the temple, the Washington side off Exit 13, and out toward Ivins and Santa Clara near Snow Canyon and Tuacahn.

Spending a few nights off the grid?
Southern Utah has plenty of places to camp without hookups, from BLM land on the edges of town to dry sites in the canyon country around Zion. A portable power station handles phones, lights, fans and a small fridge with no generator running, and a pair of solar panels can keep it topped up under that strong desert sun.
