Jacksonville covers more land than any other city in the lower 48 and spreads across both banks of the St. Johns River, so where you park shapes the trip. Most private RV parks sit on the Northside and Westside near I-95, I-295 and Jacksonville International Airport, with one central pocket on Philips Highway. From those parks the Atlantic beach towns are roughly 35 minutes east, and Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island is about 40 minutes away. Camping right on the coast mostly means public campgrounds such as Fort Clinch State Park. Mild winters bring snowbirds, and many guests come for work or treatment near the naval stations, Mayo Clinic and the UF Proton Therapy Institute.

Ready for hurricane season on the First Coast?
Hurricane season here runs June through November, and a storm that only brushes the coast can still cut power across the Northside for a day or more. A portable power station keeps a fridge, fans, a CPAP and phones running while crews work, and it is just as handy on a beach day out on Amelia Island. A solar panel lets it recharge without firing up a generator.
