13,000 Watt Generators

A 13,000 watt generator is a popular size for whole-house backup: about 10,500 running watts on gasoline, enough for a well pump, fridge, freezer, furnace, and lights at the same time, with a 50 amp outlet that feeds a transfer switch. Every model here runs on gasoline and propane, and two add natural gas.

Specifications from the manufacturers' published spec sheets. The DuroStar DS13000MXT is listed as not EPA certified and not 50-state emissions compliant, so check your state's rules before you buy.

What will a 13,000 watt generator run?

Plan on the running watts, not the 13,000 peak. For long runs keep your load at or below about 80% of running watts, roughly 8,400 watts on gasoline. The 50 amp 14-50 outlet can deliver up to 12,000 watts to your home through a 50 amp transfer switch.
