EG4 18kPV hybrid inverter compared with the EG4 12000XP off-grid inverter

EG4 12000XP vs 18kPV: Off-Grid or Hybrid, Which One Do You Need?

The EG4 12000XP is an off-grid inverter. The EG4 18kPV is a hybrid inverter that can also sell power back to the grid. Both put out 12,000 watts of 120/240V split-phase power from a 48V battery bank. The 12000XP takes more solar (24kW), has a bigger short surge, and costs less. The 18kPV adds grid sellback, an outdoor-rated enclosure, and a 10-year warranty.

The short version: staying connected to the grid and want to export solar? Get the 18kPV. Going fully off-grid, or never plan to sell back? The 12000XP does more for less.

Source: EG4 spec sheets for the 12000XP and 18kPV-12LV. The 15,000 W rating applies only to the newer 12000XP model number; earlier units are rated 12,000 W.

The big difference: grid sellback

The 18kPV is certified to UL 1741 SB and IEEE 1547, the standards utilities look for when you connect solar to the grid. That lets it send extra solar to the grid under a net metering or sellback agreement, once your utility approves the connection.

The 12000XP never exports. It can use grid or generator power to charge your batteries and pass power through to your loads, which is why EG4 calls it an off-grid inverter "with grid charge capability." If you are not planning to sell power back, you are paying for a feature you will not use with the 18kPV.

Which one handles big loads better?

Both deliver 12,000 watts continuous. For short motor starts, the 12000XP is stronger: 15,360 W for about 10 seconds, and EG4 says it can start a 5-ton air conditioner without a soft starter. The 18kPV's surge rating is lower at peak but lasts much longer: 13,500 W for 10 minutes without solar.

The 12000XP also has cleaner output (under 3% THD vs under 5%) and a lower noise rating.

Which one takes more solar?

The 12000XP: up to 24,000 W of usable solar on two MPPTs, compared with 18,000 W on the 18kPV's three MPPTs. The 18kPV's higher 600 VDC input allows longer strings and smaller wire, and its third MPPT makes it easier to split panels across roof faces.

Where will it be installed?

This settles it for a lot of people. The 12000XP is IP20, so it goes indoors in a garage, utility room, or shed, within 32°F to 113°F at full load. The 18kPV is NEMA 4X and rated from -13°F to 140°F, so it can mount outside on the wall next to your panel.

Which should you buy?

Choose the EG4 12000XP if:

  • You are going fully off-grid, or you only want the grid as a backup charger.
  • You have a large solar array and want the most usable solar per inverter.
  • You need to start big motors like a well pump or central air.
  • You can install it indoors and want the lower price.

Choose the EG4 18kPV if:

  • You are staying on the grid and want to sell extra solar back under net metering.
  • You want to mount the inverter outdoors.
  • You want a 10-year warranty instead of 5.
  • You want 200 A of grid pass-through for a larger service.

Price and availability

The EG4 12000XP is $1,899.97 and the EG4 18kPV is $3,999.97. Stock on the 12000XP changes quickly, so check its product page for current availability.

If the 12000XP is out of stock: two EG4 6000XP inverters in parallel ($1,499.97 each) give you 12,000 W of off-grid output and 16,000 W of usable solar. That costs more than one 12000XP, but it gets you running now.

EG4 12000XP vs 18kPV FAQ

What is the difference between the EG4 12000XP and 18kPV? The 12000XP is an off-grid inverter that cannot sell power to the grid. The 18kPV is a hybrid that can. Both output 12,000 W at 240V; the 12000XP takes more solar and costs less, while the 18kPV is outdoor-rated with a 10-year warranty.

Can the EG4 12000XP be used with the grid? It can charge batteries from the grid and pass grid power through to your loads (up to 100 A), but it cannot export power back to the grid.

Is the EG4 18kPV good for off-grid? Yes. It runs fully off-grid too. You just pay for grid-tie features you would not use.

Can the 12000XP be installed outside? Not as-is. It is rated IP20 for indoor use. The 18kPV is NEMA 4X for outdoor installs.

Can I parallel them? Each one parallels with its own model: up to 16 units for the 12000XP and up to 10 for the 18kPV.
