Grundfos 11 SQF-2 SQFlex solar water pump for garden irrigation

Solar Water Pump for Garden: 3 Ways to Water With Solar Power

The simplest solar water pump for a garden depends on where your water comes from. From a rain barrel or pond, a small DC pump wired straight to a solar panel works for light watering. To run the 120V pump you already own, use a solar generator: a power station charged by solar panels. From a well, a solar well pump like the Grundfos SQFlex runs directly on solar panels with no battery at all.

Below is how each setup works, how to size it, and the in-stock gear we would use.

How much water does a garden need?

A common guideline is about 1 inch of water per week. One inch of water over one square foot is about 0.62 gallons (1/12 ft x 7.48 gallons per cubic foot).

Garden size Gallons per week (1 inch) Gallons per day
100 sq ft About 62 About 9
500 sq ft About 312 About 45
1,000 sq ft About 623 About 89

Hot, dry weather and sandy soil need more. That daily number is what your pump and solar setup have to deliver.

Option 1: A small DC pump wired to a solar panel

For a rain barrel, a pond, or a small drip line, a 12V or 24V DC pump can run straight from a solar panel. No battery, no inverter. The trade-offs: it only runs while the sun is out, it slows down under clouds, and small DC pumps move modest amounts of water at low pressure. Match the panel's voltage and wattage to the pump maker's spec.

Option 2: Run your existing pump on a solar generator

If you already have a 120V transfer, utility, or sprinkler pump, a power station charged by solar panels can run it, and the battery lets you water in the evening when plants need it most.

How to size it:

  1. Find the amps on your pump's label and multiply by 120 to get its watts (VA). Your power station's continuous output must be higher, with room for the motor to start.
  2. Figure out how many minutes a day it runs: gallons per day divided by the pump's gallons per minute.
  3. Daily energy = watts x minutes / 60.

Example: a pump labeled 6 amps draws about 720 watts (6 x 120). If it moves 10 GPM and your 500 sq ft garden needs 45 gallons a day, it runs about 4.5 minutes. 720 x 4.5 / 60 = 54 Wh per day. A 200 watt panel easily replaces that on a sunny day.

Capacity and output are from each product page. A sprinkler pump that needs 240V will not run on these 120V units. Browse more portable power stations.

Option 3: A solar well pump for garden irrigation

If your water is in a well, skip the battery. The Grundfos 11 SQF-2 SQFlex runs directly on 30 to 300 VDC from solar panels (or 90 to 240 VAC), with built-in MPPT and dry-run protection. Its spec list shows up to 12.5 GPM and up to 395 ft of head, with rotor and spray irrigation among its listed uses. $3,099.97

Because it pumps only while the sun is up, most people pump into a storage tank during the day and water from the tank whenever they want. Which option should you choose?

Your water source Best setup Battery?
Rain barrel or small pond, light watering Small DC pump + panel No
Barrel, pond, or tank with a 120V pump you already own Solar generator (power station + panels) Yes, built in
Well Solar well pump (Grundfos SQFlex) + storage tank No

Solar water pump for garden FAQ

Can a solar panel run a water pump directly? Yes, if the pump is built for it: a DC pump matched to the panel, or a solar well pump like the Grundfos SQFlex. A regular 120V AC pump needs a power station or an inverter and battery.

How many solar panels do I need to run a garden pump? Work out the pump's daily watt-hours (watts x minutes / 60). A small garden pump running a few minutes a day often needs only one 100 to 200 watt panel to recharge a power station.

Will a solar pump work on cloudy days? A direct-solar pump slows or stops under heavy clouds. A power station stores energy so you can water anytime, and a tank stores water from a solar well pump.

How much water does a garden need per day? About 1 inch per week is a common guideline: roughly 45 gallons a day for a 500 sq ft garden.
