EG4 24K hybrid solar mini split heat pump installed outside a home

How Many Solar Panels Does It Take to Run an Air Conditioner?

A 12,000 BTU window air conditioner or mini split can run mostly on solar during the day with about 1,200 watts of solar panels. A 24,000 BTU mini split needs roughly 1,600 to 2,400 watts. Central air is a much bigger job: a typical 3-ton system draws around 3,300 watts while it runs, so plan on 5,000 watts of panels or more plus a large battery if you want to run it on solar alone.

The exact number depends on two things: how many watts your air conditioner draws, and whether it is a hybrid solar unit that takes panels directly or a regular unit running from a solar battery system. Below is how to work out both, with real specs from the units we carry.

How many watts does an air conditioner use?

You can estimate an air conditioner's running watts from two numbers on its spec sheet: its cooling capacity in BTU and its EER (energy efficiency ratio), which is BTU of cooling per watt.

Running watts = BTU / EER

Air conditioner Cooling Efficiency Watts at full output
EG4 9K mini split 9,000 BTU EER 13.23 about 680W (rated input range 190 to 1,000W)
EG4 12K hybrid solar window unit 12,000 BTU EER 10.4 about 1,150W
EG4 24K hybrid solar mini split 24,000 BTU EER2 11.7 about 2,050W
Typical 3-ton central air (example) 36,000 BTU EER 11 about 3,300W
Typical 5-ton central air (example) 60,000 BTU EER 11 about 5,450W

Two things change the real-world number. First, variable-speed (inverter) air conditioners like the EG4 units spend most of their time running below full output once the room is cool, so their average draw is lower than the table. Second, older single-speed units cycle on and off at full power, and each start pulls a surge several times the running watts. That surge does not change how many panels you need, but it does decide how big your inverter has to be.

Two ways to run an air conditioner on solar

  • A hybrid solar air conditioner. Panels wire straight into the unit, with no inverter or battery in between. On a sunny day it cools mostly on solar and blends in grid power when the sun fades. This is the simplest and cheapest way to cut your cooling bill with solar.
  • Any air conditioner on a solar battery system. Panels charge a battery bank, and an inverter powers the air conditioner from the battery. This is how you run AC off grid or after dark, but it takes a much larger system.

How many solar panels for a hybrid solar air conditioner?

For a hybrid unit, size the array to the manufacturer's solar input rating, since that is what the unit is built to use.

  • EG4 12K hybrid solar window unit: EG4 recommends a 1,200 watt array. That is about three 400 watt panels' worth or six 200 watt panels' worth. The unit accepts 75 to 350 volts DC (380V maximum open-circuit voltage), so the panels have to be wired to land inside that window.
  • EG4 24K hybrid solar mini split: rated for 2,200 watts of solar, with EG4 recommending about 1,600 to 2,400 watts. That is roughly four to six 400 watt panels. It accepts 150 to 380 volts DC.

Panel voltages vary by model, so check the open-circuit voltage of the panels you choose before you plan the string, or call us and we will lay it out with you. Browse monocrystalline solar panels and our 400 watt solar panel lineup.

Keep in mind what a hybrid unit does after dark: the EG4 units fall back to grid power at night. If you need cooling at night with no grid, you need a battery system, covered next.

How many solar panels for an air conditioner on a battery system?

Size the system to the energy the air conditioner uses over a day, not just its running watts.

Daily watt-hours = average running watts x hours of use

Solar watts = daily watt-hours / (peak sun hours x 0.75)

The 0.75 covers losses from heat, wiring, dust, charging, and the inverter. With 4 peak sun hours, that works out to about 1 watt of panel for every 3 watt-hours a day. Here are worked examples; your own numbers depend on climate, insulation, and thermostat setting.

Example Daily energy Solar needed (4 sun hours)
9K mini split averaging 500W for 10 hours 5,000 Wh about 1,700W
24K mini split averaging 1,200W for 10 hours 12,000 Wh about 4,000W
3-ton central air at 3,300W, running 5 of 10 hours 16,500 Wh about 5,500W

The battery covers the hours without sun. Running a 24K mini split at an average of 800 watts for 8 hours overnight takes about 6.4 kWh of usable battery, before any other loads. A 48V server rack battery stores about 5 kWh per module, so that is two modules for the air conditioner alone. See our 48v lithium battery options and our guide on how big a battery you need to run a house.

The inverter has to match the air conditioner. A 24K mini split or central air runs on 240V, so it needs a split-phase inverter with enough surge capacity for the compressor. Browse hybrid solar inverter options, or start with a complete system in our solar panel kits.

Can you run central air on solar?

Yes, but it is the largest single load in most homes. A 3-ton central air system drawing about 3,300 watts needs a 240V split-phase inverter, several kilowatts of panels, and a large battery bank if it has to run on solar alone. For many homes, the more practical path is to cool the rooms you use most with an efficient mini split, which draws a fraction of the power, and let solar carry that load.

Can a portable power station or generator run an air conditioner?

A large portable power station can run a window unit or a small mini split for a few hours, but the battery drains quickly at 700 to 1,200 watts. See what size portable power station you need. For cooling through a long outage, a generator is the usual answer; see what size generator to run a house.

Frequently asked questions

Can solar power run an air conditioner? Yes. A hybrid solar unit can run mostly on panels during the day with no battery, and any air conditioner can run from a solar battery system sized for its daily energy use.

How many solar panels does it take to run an AC unit? About 1,200 watts for a 12,000 BTU hybrid window unit, about 1,600 to 2,400 watts for a 24,000 BTU hybrid mini split, and 5,000 watts or more for central air running on solar alone.

Will a 400W solar panel run an air conditioner? Not by itself. A single 400 watt panel makes roughly 1,200 Wh on a good day after losses, and even a small window unit draws about 1,150 watts at full output. It can help, but plan on several panels.

Do solar air conditioners work at night? Hybrid units like the EG4 models switch to grid power at night. To run at night without the grid, you need a battery bank and inverter sized for the overnight hours.

Do I need a battery to run an air conditioner on solar? Not with a hybrid solar unit, which uses panels directly and fills in from the grid. You need a battery for off-grid cooling or cooling after sunset without grid power.

How many solar panels to run AC 24 hours a day? Size the panels to the full day's energy and the battery to the night. For a 24K mini split averaging 1,000 watts around the clock, that is about 24 kWh a day, or roughly 8,000 watts of panels and 10 kWh or more of battery. Most homes cut that sharply by letting the thermostat drift up overnight.
