DuroMax XP9500iH dual fuel inverter generator

How Long Does a Generator Last? Lifespan and What Affects It

A portable generator typically lasts about 10 to 15 years with regular maintenance. The CPSC estimates the expected useful life of portable generators at 11 years, based on sales and ownership data, and Champion Power Equipment says a well-maintained unit can last 10 to 15 years. The CPSC notes that life depends mostly on engine size, the loads you run, hours of use, and how well the generator is maintained and stored.

Generator lifespan: what the sources say

Source Figure What it means
CPSC (2023) 11 years Expected useful product life of portable generators, from sales and ownership surveys
Champion Power Equipment 10 to 15 years For a well-maintained generator, depending on hours, conditions, and service
EPA engine rules (40 CFR 1054) 250, 500, or 1,000 hours for Class II nonhandheld engines The emissions "useful life" period an engine is certified to, not a promise of how long it will run

Sources: CPSC proposed rule, Federal Register (April 20, 2023); Champion Power Equipment maintenance guide; 40 CFR 1054.107. You will see 1,000 to 2,000 hour lifespans quoted online, but we could not find a manufacturer or government source for them, so we do not use them.

What makes a generator last longer

  • Break it in. DuroMax's manuals call for 6 to 8 hours on conventional oil at under 50% load, then an oil change.
  • Change the oil on schedule. DuroMax: change at the first month or 8 hours, then every 3 months or 50 hours of heavy use, or every 6 months or 100 hours of normal use. DuroMax warns that worn or dirty oil does not cool the engine properly and can cause catastrophic engine damage. Details in What Oil Does a Generator Use?
  • Keep the air filter clean. The XP13000EH manual says to clean it every 50 hours, or every 10 hours in unusually dusty conditions.
  • Do the longer service items. The same schedule calls for idle speed and valve clearance checks at 12 months or 300 hours, and combustion chamber cleaning at 3 years or 500 hours.
  • Avoid sustained overload. DuroMax notes that sustained high-load, high-temperature, wet, or dusty use requires more frequent service.
  • Store it right. For storage over 30 days, DuroMax's FAQ says to drain the fuel tank and carburetor bowl, put about 2 tablespoons of oil in the spark plug hole and pull the recoil to coat the cylinder, and keep the battery on a trickle charger.
  • Use fresh fuel. DuroMax warns that gasoline older than 30 days can permanently damage the fuel system.

Can a generator run nonstop?

DuroMax says a generator can run continuously as long as it has fuel, but it still needs to be shut down for scheduled maintenance. In a week-long outage running around the clock, that is about 168 hours, which passes the 50-hour heavy-use oil change interval three times. Stock oil before storm season.
